In a letter delivered to Congress yesterday, over 120 groups nationwide - representing individuals from scientists and anglers to auto workers and surfers - called for strong federal action that would help prevent the introduction of new aquatic invasive species. According to the letter, legislation should include provisions that would enact uniform standards for ballast water discharge; screen organisms for invasiveness before they are imported; support education and outreach programs to reduce the potential for harmful introductions; and create a “rapid response” system for containment, control, and eradication of initial invasions in aquatic systems.
